Amazon Web Services is a multi-billion-dollar subsidiary of Amazon. With over a million customers and over 10 billion dollars in revenue, AWS is the biggest player in the cloud computing space.

If you use Amazon Web Services, there are several techniques you can use to reduce your costs. In this article, I’ll briefly explain three techniques for paying less on AWS.

Technique #1: Track your usage. The more you track where your expenses are going, the easier it will be for you to determine which expenses can be cut. Sometimes you’ll notice that you’re wasting bandwidth by serving uncompressed files. If you use Amazon Simple Email Services, you might save money from simply removing people from your e-mail lists.

Technique #2: Consolidate Your Billings. Many companies have multiple AWS accounts. This is usually a mistake since many AWS services offer tier discounts. In storing data, for example, the first 15TB of data cost $.19/GB. Afterwards, the price drops up to $.13/GB. This can represent huge savings.

Technique #3 Using available discounts. The main goal of Amazon Web Services is to capture as much market share as possible. Therefore, Amazon has launched a very aggressive campaign to provide discounts for different people.

For example, if you will a survey, Amazon will award you with either $25 or $50 discount codes. You can also get discounts if you sign up for the AWS Educate program, or if you attend an event such as the Hackathon event.
